How do you bring a long long long pathway to life?
Cantigny Park, Illinois, US
Painted graphic pattern systems turn long urban stretches into expressive pathways, encouraging interaction between pedestrians.
Created in collaboration with designer Rami Obeid, each pathway has its own character, inviting you to meander, jump, or dance, alone or together.

Each design incorporates three layers of interaction, offering diverse ways to engage with the patterns. Choose a colour and see where it takes you, follow a winding path through the artwork, or create optical illusions with others from afar.

The pathways build on pattern design as a conceptual foundation, using geometric shapes inspired by different ways of moving through space. This approach enables the creation of intricate, playful designs while maintaining a repeatable structure.

Shortcut Shuffle was commissioned for Cantigny Park, a vast garden with many paths and destinations. A total of 3 miles of graphic pathways transformed 4 strategic asphalt segments that are particularly long for visitors, creating visually striking invitations to explore.
3 key segments had their own pattern and way to play. This helped wayfinding across the site, while enriching interaction during transit time between one site attraction and the next.
The fourth segment, a circuit connecting all the pathways, offered a chance to playfully combine the three pattern designs, and guide visitors to our touring Musical Swings installation.
