In certain areas of the world, the Sun sets the rhythm of travel. Public spaces there are designed to maximize areas of shade and to protect us from the harsh sun. Musical Shadows seeks to play with the sun instead, to create a collective musical experience.
Designed for an outdoor location, this interactive paved floor plays music with light. Passers-by are invited to explore how their shadows triggers musical notes, and how they can express themselves in public with their whole body.
How It Works
The movement of the Sun changes luminosity. During a day, shadows stretch and transform, change orientation and intensity. Musical Shadows’ interactive pavement detects these solar variations: the voices and instruments coming from the pavement evolve depending on the hour of the day.
A person discovering the piece at dusk or dawn will never trigger the same melody. Whether they go through the installation walking or dancing, anybody is free to choose how they want to engage with it and allow themselves to be surprised by its infinite possibilities, each time they experience it.
The Pearl Divers of Dubai
In 2019, a new version of Musical Shadows titled The Pearl Divers was installed in Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates. This piece is inspired by the Dubai tradition of pearl diving and sings traditional bayati melodies as people pass through.
